ONTARIO MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS – 2016
The Bruce Ski Club hosted the 2016 Ontario Masters
Championships at their Sawmill Nordic Centre trails on January 29 , 30, and 31.
Ski conditions where excellent that weekend. The venue consisted of an 11 km
skate on Friday with 23 participants, a 22 km skate on Saturday with 29
participants and a 22 km classic on Sunday with 31 participants. Overall the
events had 54 participants, 22 of who where local club members. During the event
a group of volunteers took pictures over the 3 day event. These pictures can be
accessed by going to the following website: https://flic.kr/s/aHsksYpgFx
Race results for the event can be viewed on Zone 4
On behalf of the Bruce Ski Club we thank all who
participated and volunteered.
MASTERS WORLD CUP - 2016
The following Ontario skiers participated in the
Masters World Cup from Feb 4 – 12, 2016.
Maureen Bretz Allan Magi Wendy Grater Katja Mathys Ken
Hawthorn
Unfortunately, Kit Pizzey had an injury prior to the
event, which meant that she and Len could not travel to Finland and compete.
Joseph Kryger also had a knee injury which kept him from competing, but he
travelled to Finland and was support for the team.
The rest of us had a great time. Conditions were much
warmer than expected, but the organizers did a great job in ensuring the trails
were in good shape for all the races. You can see results on the website
www.mwc2016.com.
MEMBERSHIP
We have had a drop from 103 members last season to 93
this year. At first glance, this number does not seem excessive when we compare
the quality of the ski conditions between last year and this season. However on
further analysis, at this year’s Ontario Masters Championships we had 19 new
members joining our association for the first time. In addition, there were
another 5 skiers who competed at Hepworth who had not been members for 2 or
more years. It is troubling that 43 of our 2014-15 members did not rejoin this
year.
We thank our members for the purchase of 47 ski draw
tickets and donations of $245.00. The ski draw is an undertaking of the
Canadian Masters Cross Country Ski Association. We expect the draw will take
place later this month and we will announce the winner in the next newsletter.
We welcome the following 19 new members, hope they had
a great time at the Ontario Masters
Championships and look forward to seeing them at
events next season.
